The waiting is over, and unlike a prediction made six weeks ago this one has something useful behind it: final 53-man rosters, the waiver wire settled, preseason injuries known, depth chart battles decided and the full schedule published.
That changes the picture considerably.
The defending champion
Seattle Seahawks are trying to prove they weren't a one-year wonder. The
Los Angeles Rams have gone all-in β and then went further, which we'll get to.
Buffalo Bills loaded up around Josh Allen, while
Denver Broncos,
Houston Texans and
Baltimore Ravens all arrive with real conference aspirations.
One ground rule: I'm not predicting the standings after five weeks. I'm predicting where every team finishes after seventeen games. Some of these will make people angry. That's the job.
We call every one of these games in public too β three calls a game, locked twenty minutes before kickoff and graded the next morning against the number they were locked at. The verdict slate carries the running record, and the Week 1 guide has all sixteen openers.
AFC EAST
Buffalo Bills 12-5 β AFC East champions
Buffalo stays one of the safest bets in football for one simple reason: Josh Allen hands them an enormous weekly edge at the position that matters most.
They spent the offseason fixing the receiving corps around him and making a genuine effort on defence. The question is whether that defence stays healthy enough to survive the AFC's collection of elite quarterbacks.
I don't expect them to dominate weekly. I expect Allen to rescue them several times.
Anything short of the AFC Championship Game will feel like a disappointment.
New England Patriots 10-7 β Wild Card
The hardest possible opening: a trip to Seattle for a Super Bowl rematch on Wednesday, September 9 β the first Wednesday opener since 2012.
This roster is far deeper than the rebuild years, though the offence still has to prove it against elite defences. And they open shorthanded: Harold Landry III and Brenden Schooler are both expected to miss at least four games.
That matters early. It doesn't stop me projecting double digits.
New England isn't rebuilding anymore. They're in the conversation.
New York Jets 8-9
I'm buying the Jets, a little. Geno Smith gives them competent veteran quarterback play, Breece Hall remains one of the league's more dangerous weapons, and Garrett Wilson is a genuine number one. The line has real young pieces in Olu Fashanu and Armand Membou.
The secondary is the problem. After one of the worst defensive seasons in the league, New York is asking several new pieces to stabilise the back end at once.
Eight wins is real progress. Nine or ten puts them in the Wild Card race.
Miami Dolphins 4-13
Too many holes, particularly on offence. The quarterback situation is unsettled and the receiver group doesn't inspire what Miami's offence usually does. They added on defence, but you don't rebuild a roster in one summer.
A transitional year. The real win is learning which young players belong in the next version of this team.
AFC NORTH
Baltimore Ravens 11-6 β AFC North champions
Still one of the hardest teams in football to prepare for. Lamar Jackson gives them a ceiling almost nobody matches, and Baltimore's physical identity travels.
The worry is whether the defence gets consistent stops against the conference's best passing attacks. Expect a few frustrating losses to elite AFC teams β the floor stays high regardless.
They don't need to reinvent anything. They need health and their best football in January.
Cincinnati Bengals 10-7 β Wild Card
Possibly the most important bounce-back season in the conference. Joe Burrow is healthy, and Ja'Marr Chase with Tee Higgins is one of the best receiver pairs in football.
They attacked the defence hard, adding Dexter Lawrence II and Jonathan Allen. The offensive line remains the concern, and it's the whole season: hold up and this is an 11 or 12 win team, fold and it's another frustrating year.
Super Bowl talent. The question is whether the roster around Burrow is finally enough.
Pittsburgh Steelers 8-9
Pittsburgh finds ways to win games. That's what Pittsburgh does. I just don't see the offensive consistency for a genuine contender.
They kept their entire rookie class at cutdown, which tells you where the front office's head is. The defence keeps them in everything β I'm expecting too many close losses.
They'll be annoying every week. Annoying isn't a playoff team.
Cleveland Browns 3-14
Cleveland made moves I genuinely like. The problem is quarterback, which is where optimism goes to die fastest in this league.
Better than the record in places. Quarterback instability keeps the ceiling on the floor.
AFC SOUTH
Houston Texans 11-6 β AFC South champions
One of my favourite teams to make a real jump. C.J. Stroud is surrounded by elite defensive talent in Will Anderson Jr. and Derek Stingley Jr., with Danielle Hunter adding to the rush. They shored up line depth before the season too.
Everything hinges on whether Stroud returns to his early-career level. I think he does.
The defensive foundation and the quarterback to be a genuine AFC Championship contender.
Jacksonville Jaguars 10-7 β Wild Card
My favourite sleeper. Trevor Lawrence needs another step, and Travis Hunter is a potentially transformative weapon β his ability to affect games on both sides makes Jacksonville genuinely hard to evaluate by conventional means.
If Lawrence plays like a franchise quarterback for seventeen games, this projection is light.
Indianapolis Colts 8-9
Enough talent to stay relevant, in a division handing out no free wins. Competitive defensively with enough offence to win a handful, but not the consistency for the division race.
Could finish anywhere from 6-11 to 10-7 depending on quarterback play and health.
Tennessee Titans 5-12
Still building, and the roster churn at cutdown said so β they moved on from Will Levis and Hendon Hooker in the same afternoon. Young talent, new identity, not ready to run with Houston and Jacksonville over seventeen games.
They need development, not a miracle.
AFC WEST
Denver Broncos 11-6 β AFC West champions
Maybe the most balanced roster in football β a defence that wins ugly games, enough offence when required, and steady improvement.
The division is going to be a nightmare. Denver has the consistency I trust most in it.
No longer up-and-coming. This is a playoff roster.
Kansas City Chiefs 10-7 β Wild Card
This is where people yell at me.
No, the Chiefs aren't dead. But they aren't automatically winning 12 or 13 either. They missed the playoffs last season and the roster has turned over β Kenneth Walker III, the Super Bowl LX MVP, arrives on a three-year deal and gives the offence a dimension it lacked.
Patrick Mahomes makes ten wins the floor rather than the ceiling.
If Mahomes is healthy in January, nobody wants this draw.
Los Angeles Chargers 10-7 β Wild Card
Justin Herbert in a genuinely creative offensive environment is the most interesting experiment in the division. He has the physical tools to thrive in it.
Talented enough to win the division. I'm just not convinced they will.
Potentially the most dangerous Wild Card team in the AFC.
Las Vegas Raiders 5-12
Talent, yes. The quarterback question is impossible to ignore. Expect a couple of spectacular individual games and an upset or two β but across seventeen, consistency beats flashes.
Another offseason from serious.
NFC EAST
Philadelphia Eagles 11-6 β NFC East champions
Still loaded. They carried four quarterbacks on the final 53, which tells you plenty about how this front office thinks about depth.
There are questions about chemistry and expectation. The talent level is too high for me to project a collapse.
They don't need to be perfect. They need to reach January healthy.
Dallas Cowboys 10-7 β Wild Card
Here comes the annual Cowboys prediction. Dallas is better than people think β Dak Prescott can still carry an offence, and they added protection for him at cutdown, trading for Broderick Jones from Pittsburgh.
The backfield settled itself in a way most people missed: Jaydon Blue was waived and cleared, Malik Davis won the RB2 job outright, and they claimed Emari Demercado off waivers for depth behind Javonte Williams.
The problem is the division. Philadelphia is the more complete roster.
Ten wins gets them in. What follows depends on whether the defence becomes trustworthy.
Washington Commanders 7-10
An aggressive offseason and a deeper roster, without enough evidence yet to call them a playoff team. They'll be competitive. They'll also lose games they should win.
Right direction. Still an offseason short.
New York Giants 5-12
Exciting young pieces, too many questions. The quarterback room needs to settle and the young roster needs to develop fast.
Two names worth watching that survived cutdown: Odell Beckham Jr. made the 53 in a five-man receiver room, and Najee Harris made it back from an Achilles. Roster spots are information β the Giants believe both can contribute.
Not hopeless. Just not ready.
NFC NORTH
Green Bay Packers 11-6 β NFC North champions
My slightly aggressive pick. This roster can be elite if Jordan Love takes another step, and that's exactly the bet I'm making β the argument rests on his efficiency and the offence putting more on his shoulders.
One complication that arrived late: Josh Jacobs was placed on the commissioner's exempt list, and Green Bay moved fast to trade for Kaleb Johnson from Pittsburgh. That was insurance bought for a reason, and it's the biggest late fantasy development of the summer.
Genuine Super Bowl potential if Love becomes a top-five quarterback.
Chicago Bears 10-7 β Wild Card
I really like Chicago. Caleb Williams enters year three with far more stability around him and an offence that could be one of the league's more explosive.
The defence is the question. Kyler Gordon's injury and the absence of Coby Bryant leave real secondary concerns.
If that defence stays healthy, this team wins the division.
Detroit Lions 9-8
My disappointment pick, and that isn't the same as saying they're bad. Expectations have simply run ahead of reality.
Jahmyr Gibbs could have an enormous year β David Montgomery went to Houston and took 16 inside-5 carries with him, which was the exact thing capping Gibbs' touchdown ceiling. Detroit signed Isiah Pacheco to fill the complementary role.
But they have to replace real production and fix last year's defensive inconsistency.
Capable of the playoffs. I'm not convinced it happens.
Minnesota Vikings 8-9
One of the hardest teams in the league to project. Real talent, especially around Justin Jefferson β who commanded a 28.5% target share and finished with two touchdowns, which is not a receiver in decline, it's a receiver whose quarterback play collapsed underneath him.
Quarterback consistency is still the elephant. They also lost outside linebacker Tyler Batty to a season-ending ACL in preseason.
Strong quarterback play makes this record look foolish by December.
NFC SOUTH
Tampa Bay Buccaneers 9-8 β NFC South champions
Somebody has to win it. The South has no obvious powerhouse, which means the team avoiding the worst stretches takes it β and Tampa has the offensive talent and veteran experience to be that team.
Possibly the weakest division champion in football. Still a division title.
Carolina Panthers 8-9
My sleeper in the South. Steady roster building and enough young talent for real improvement. I'm just not sure they beat the better teams outside the division consistently.
Could absolutely steal this division if things break right.
Atlanta Falcons 7-10
Better on paper than in the standings, as usual. There's talent and there are explosive players β I need to see sustained consistency first.
One quiet note: Tyler Allgeier left for Arizona, taking eight touchdowns of goal-line work with him. That's a real boost to Bijan Robinson.
Could beat this projection. Not betting on it yet.
New Orleans Saints 5-12
Still in transition, still without an overwhelming answer at quarterback. That combination usually produces close games and not enough wins.
This isn't a one-year turnaround.
NFC WEST
Los Angeles Rams 12-5 β NFC West champions Β· Super Bowl pick
This is my Super Bowl pick, and the roster construction has gone somewhere close to absurd.
Matthew Stafford remains one of the best postseason quarterbacks in the league. They traded for Myles Garrett. And then, hours before the cutdown deadline, they did the thing nobody saw coming:
Aaron Donald came out of retirement.
One year, $20 million with escalators to $30 million. He's 35 and hasn't played since January 2024, having walked away after the 2023 season with eight first-team All-Pro selections and ten straight Pro Bowls. He came back for one reason, and that reason is the man they traded for earlier this year.
Between them, Donald and Garrett own five Defensive Player of the Year awards and 236.5 career sacks. A Hall of Fame interior rusher lined up next to a Hall of Fame edge.
They were already Super Bowl LXI favourites at +500 with a win total of 11.5, tied for the highest in the league. The West is brutal enough that I won't project fourteen wins. Twelve, absolutely.
If they stay healthy, this is the team most likely to represent the NFC in Super Bowl LXI.
Seattle Seahawks 10-7 β Wild Card
Seattle won the Super Bowl. That doesn't mean they repeat.
They lost real pieces β Kenneth Walker III to Kansas City, plus Coby Bryant, Riq Woolen and Boye Mafe β and offensive coordinator Klint Kubiak departed. That's a lot of turnover for a defending champion.
They still have an outstanding staff, Sam Darnold, Jaxon Smith-Njigba β the reigning Offensive Player of the Year who led the NFL in receiving, and our 1.01 in the draft guide β and enough defence to contend.
Good enough for the playoffs. Repeating is another matter.
San Francisco 49ers 9-8
My most controversial NFC call. San Francisco is still loaded. The West is just brutal.
They open against the Rams in Melbourne on Thursday, September 10 β a division game on the other side of the world, with body clock, travel and an unfamiliar surface stacked into one afternoon. That game tells us immediately whether the 49ers belong in this division's top tier.
Expect a very good team with a mediocre record because of its schedule.
Arizona Cardinals 5-12
More talent than the record suggests, in the worst possible neighbourhood. Navigating the Rams, Seahawks and 49ers is a brutal environment for a team still establishing itself.
Marvin Harrison Jr. is the piece to build on, and they added Tyler Allgeier for the goal-line work. They also let Trey Benson hit waivers after taking Jeremiyah Love third overall β which tells you exactly where that backfield is headed.
Arizona is likely a considerably better team in 2027.

The Biggest Calls
π₯ Super Bowl LXI:
Los Angeles Rams. They went all-in and then brought Aaron Donald back. I think the aggression pays.
π NFC Champion:
Los Angeles Rams. The West will beat everybody up, but nobody else pairs that quarterback, that pass rush and that urgency.
π AFC Champion:
Buffalo Bills. Josh Allen finally gets them over.
π Biggest breakout:
Jacksonville Jaguars. Enough young talent to jump into the AFC's upper class.
π Biggest disappointment:
Detroit Lions. Not because they're bad β because expectations are enormous.
π¨ Most likely to beat this:
Chicago Bears. If Caleb Williams leaps and the defence survives, eleven or twelve.
π Nobody wants them in January:
Kansas City Chiefs. Ten wins doesn't look spectacular. Patrick Mahomes in a playoff game does.
Check Every One Of These Against Us All Season
A projection made in September is worth exactly what you can check it against in December, so here's where to hold this article accountable.
The verdict slate carries our call on every game β moneyline, spread and total. Each one stays live all week against the current number, locks twenty minutes before kickoff by a scheduled job rather than a page view, and gets graded the next morning against the number it was locked at. Not the closing number, because grading against a line that moved is a lie that flatters us.
The public ledger stamps every one, win or loss, with nothing quietly removed. The calibration page asks the harder question β when we say seventy percent, are we right seven times in ten?
The Daily Card writes each day's picks to a permanent address that never changes, so a year from now this is a library rather than a page.
Build off it
The NFL parlay generator builds from the same graded board, and the Parlay Doctor grades any slip A through F β true break-even, buried juice, and which legs are secretly correlated. The teaser generator scans the slate for legs crossing both 3 and 7, the only teaser shape that has ever cleared its break-even.
BetScore rates every prop 1 to 100 against the nine-book price. The Projection Board puts our number next to the best available price with the edge between them. Splits shows how often a player has actually cleared a number, and the heat map puts nine books side by side.
Price it with devig, size it with Kelly, log it in CLV. The rest is in the Money Room.
Playing fantasy instead
Import your team and the Roster Doctor grades every man you own. The transaction wire refreshes every fifteen minutes with every move linked to the depth chart it changed, and the free agent wire is where championships get built in Weeks 2 through 5.
The December Board grades every player on Weeks 15 through 17 β the weeks that actually decide your league β scored against 2,172 real Decembers. And the NFL vault has every stat board back to 2023.
The Bottom Line
The defining fact of this season is that there is no overwhelming favourite.
The Rams may have the deepest championship roster ever assembled on paper. Buffalo has Allen. Baltimore has Jackson. Philadelphia is loaded. Green Bay has enormous upside. Houston is dangerous. Denver wins ugly. Cincinnati has one of the best quarterbacks alive. Kansas City has Mahomes.
And below them sit the teams waiting for somebody to underestimate them.
Which is why I'd be unsurprised if six or seven of these records are completely wrong by the end of November. But with my name on the board before Week 1:
Rams over Bills in Super Bowl LXI. Los Angeles finishes 12-5 and turns all that roster aggression into another Lombardi.
