Two weeks into an NFL season, everybody is still trying to figure out what is real and what is just September bullshit.
But Week 3 is where the picture starts getting a little clearer.
There are teams sitting at 2-0 that look legitimate. There are 0-2 teams that are better than their record. There are 1-1 teams that are already facing a game that feels much bigger than it should in Week 3.
And then there are the
San Francisco 49ers.
The Niners are 2-0, Brock Purdy is playing extremely efficient football, Christian McCaffrey is producing, the offense has been nearly impossible to disrupt — and San Francisco has a chance Sunday to make the rest of the NFC West very uncomfortable.
The problem? Nick Bosa is now expected to miss multiple weeks with a calf injury — and it turns out that's not even the whole injury report; he's also carrying a knee issue, and the team is reportedly weighing whether to put him on IR outright.
So even the teams playing well aren't immune to the injury bug.
Here's the full Sunday slate, where the betting lines currently sit, what matters, who needs the win, and which teams could change the way we look at them after Sunday. Every line below is checked against today's actual market, and our own call on each game is on the verdict slate, locked twenty minutes before kickoff and graded the next morning on the public ledger.
LOS ANGELES CHARGERS AT BUFFALO BILLS
1:00 PM ET — FOX
Bills -7 to -7.5 | Total 50.5
Buffalo Bills enters Sunday at 2-0 and is beginning to look like one of the league's teams that other contenders are going to have to deal with.
The
Los Angeles Chargers are 0-2.
That's the first problem.
The second problem is that they're walking into Buffalo.
The Bills have already shown they can score in bunches, while Los Angeles desperately needs to prove that Justin Herbert and this offense can consistently finish drives.
The Chargers also have real offensive-line problems — Kayode Awosika and Trey Pipkins are both out, along with tight end Charlie Kolar, DB Elijah Molden, receiver Brenen Thompson and defensive lineman Dalvin Tomlinson. Trey Lance is questionable with a groin injury.
Buffalo has its own injury questions, particularly at receiver and along the defensive front, with Keon Coleman, DJ Moore and Ed Oliver among the players listed as questionable.
WHY IT MATTERS
For Buffalo, this is about avoiding the classic 2-0 trap.
For Los Angeles, this is much more serious.
An 0-3 start would put the Chargers in a hole before October even begins.
Betting angle: Bills -7 to -7.5. The number is significant because Buffalo is being asked to win by a full touchdown against a team with enough offensive talent to make this uncomfortable. Total: 50.5 — one of the Sunday games where the scoreboard could get busy. The Line Checker is worth a look on the total specifically, given how banged up that Chargers offensive line is.
CAROLINA PANTHERS AT CLEVELAND BROWNS
1:00 PM ET — FOX
Browns +2.5 | Total 42.5
This is one of those games that doesn't get the national attention but could have a major impact on how we view two teams that are both 1-1.
Carolina Panthers already showed it can put points on the board, while
Cleveland Browns is trying to establish exactly what kind of team it is.
The Browns getting points at home makes this an interesting betting situation — and it's worth knowing Jalen Coker and Xavier Legette are both questionable for Carolina, which could tighten an already tight receiver room.
WHY IT MATTERS
Neither team is in panic mode.
But both teams have an opportunity to leave Sunday 2-1 and suddenly become part of the early NFC/AFC playoff conversation.
NEW YORK JETS AT DETROIT LIONS
1:00 PM ET — FOX
Lions -6.5 | Total 47.5
Here comes another interesting one.
The
New York Jets are 0-2, but their record doesn't completely describe how they've played.
They pushed Green Bay into overtime last week and have shown enough offensive competence to make Detroit's defense work.
Detroit Lions, meanwhile, is coming off a loss to Buffalo and needs to get itself back into the win column.
INJURY WATCH
Worth being precise about the Jets' actual injury situation, because it's not the name you might expect. Adonai Mitchell is only questionable with a finger injury and was a limited practice participant both Thursday and Friday — he isn't the story here.
The real losses are safety Minkah Fitzpatrick (groin), tight end Mason Taylor and linebacker Francisco Mauigoa, all ruled out. Losing Fitzpatrick specifically is the one that actually changes New York's defensive complexion heading into Sunday.
Detroit's bigger question is whether its defense — already missing multiple defensive backs of its own — can actually put the Jets away.
WHY IT MATTERS
The Lions don't want to fall to 1-2 after opening the season with serious expectations.
The Jets need to stop the bleeding.
At 0-3, the conversation changes from "the Jets are competitive" to "the Jets are competitive but can't win."
Those are two very different conversations.
Betting angle: Lions -6.5, Total 47.5. The Jets getting more than a touchdown would have been a much different conversation. At 6.5, there is legitimate room for Detroit to win while New York covers.
HOUSTON TEXANS AT INDIANAPOLIS COLTS
1:00 PM ET — CBS
Texans -1.5 | Total 42.5
This is one of the games where the record doesn't tell the entire story — and worth flagging that this number has actually moved: Houston opened as a bigger favorite here and the market has come down to a field goal, not the three-point line you may have seen cited elsewhere this week.
Houston Texans is trying to get its offense moving after a difficult start, while
Indianapolis Colts is sitting at 0-2 and desperately needs something positive.
The Colts have now lost nine straight dating back to last season, including their first two games this year.
That's where the word panic starts creeping into the conversation.
WHY IT MATTERS
Indianapolis cannot afford to let this season become another slow-motion disaster.
A 0-3 team has very little margin for error in today's NFL.
Houston, meanwhile, needs this game because the Texans were expected to compete in the AFC.
Betting angle: Texans -1.5, Total 42.5. This has the profile of a game where every possession matters — and the tighter-than-expected number is exactly why. Implied probability at -1.5 is close to a coin flip, which the "-3" number floating around elsewhere doesn't reflect anymore.
KANSAS CITY CHIEFS AT MIAMI DOLPHINS
1:00 PM ET — CBS
Chiefs -10.5 to -11.5 | Total 45.5
This line tells you everything about how the market views these teams.
Kansas City Chiefs is 2-0.
Miami Dolphins is 0-2.
And Vegas has installed the Chiefs as a double-digit favorite on the road.
Patrick Mahomes is coming off a 382-yard, three-touchdown performance against Indianapolis. Travis Kelce had nine catches for 101 yards and a touchdown, while Kenneth Walker III produced 117 rushing yards.
Miami, meanwhile, has been unable to consistently generate offense.
WHY IT MATTERS
This isn't necessarily a "must win" for Miami in the mathematical sense.
But psychologically?
Absolutely.
0-3 changes the entire atmosphere around a team.
INJURY WATCH
Kansas City has Chris Jones listed as questionable with a calf injury. Mahomes and Rashee Rice are healthy.
Betting angle: Chiefs -10.5 to -11.5 — that's an enormous number for an NFL road favorite, and it moves depending on the book, so the heat map is worth checking before you take a side. Total: 45.5. The question isn't whether Kansas City can score. The question is whether Miami can contribute enough to make the total interesting.
TENNESSEE TITANS AT NEW YORK GIANTS
1:00 PM ET — FOX
Giants -2.5 | Total 38.5
This is suddenly a completely different
New York Giants team than the one people thought they would be watching three weeks ago.
Jaxson Dart's season-ending knee injury has changed everything. He underwent surgery Friday to repair a torn meniscus — with MCL and PCL damage also present, to be addressed as needed — and is expected to miss 4 to 6 months.
Now the Giants have to figure out how they survive without the quarterback they expected to develop throughout the season.
WHY IT MATTERS
This is a huge game for New York because the Giants have to stop the season from getting away from them.
The
Tennessee Titans are also 0-2.
So this isn't exactly a battle between two teams with nothing to lose.
It's a battle between two teams desperate to establish some direction.
Betting angle: Giants -2.5, Total 38.5. That total tells you exactly what Vegas expects: a football game where points are going to be expensive.
CINCINNATI BENGALS AT PITTSBURGH STEELERS
1:00 PM ET — CBS
Bengals -3.5 | Total 42.5
This one has AFC North written all over it.
Cincinnati Bengals is 2-0.
Pittsburgh Steelers is 1-1.
And the Steelers' offense has been ugly.
Pittsburgh ranks near the bottom of the league in scoring and total offense, while Cincinnati's defense has been one of the pleasant surprises of the early season. Joe Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase are already producing together, and the Bengals are starting to look considerably more balanced than expected.
WHY IT MATTERS
If Cincinnati wins, 3-0 becomes very real.
If Pittsburgh loses, the offense becomes the story.
And when you're trying to win with a veteran quarterback, that's not the story you want after three weeks.
Betting angle: Bengals -3.5, Total 42.5. This has all the ingredients of a physical, low-margin AFC North game.
SEATTLE SEAHAWKS AT WASHINGTON COMMANDERS
1:00 PM ET — FOX
Seahawks -7 to -7.5 | Total 40.5
Seattle Seahawks has been one of the teams quietly making the biggest early statement.
The Seahawks destroyed Arizona 31-7 last week and held the Cardinals to only 151 yards.
Now they face
Washington Commanders without Jayden Daniels.
Daniels is out with a dislocated left elbow and is considered week-to-week. Marcus Mariota is expected to start.
WHY IT MATTERS
Seattle could legitimately be one of those teams that moves substantially upward in the power rankings.
They are 2-0, the defense is playing extremely well and the offense — Drew Lock and Jaxon Smith-Njigba in particular — has enough explosiveness to punish mistakes.
Washington is in a completely different situation.
Panic meter: Washington. High. Not because the season is over. Because losing your starting quarterback changes everything.
NEW ENGLAND PATRIOTS AT JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS
1:00 PM ET — CBS
Jaguars -3 | Total 45.5
New England Patriots bounced back beautifully against Pittsburgh.
Jacksonville Jaguars, meanwhile, blew a 10-point lead against Denver and struggled offensively after halftime.
This is one of those games where the winner could suddenly look like a legitimate playoff contender while the loser could be staring at a 1-2 record and a long list of questions.
WHY IT MATTERS
Jacksonville needs Trevor Lawrence and the offense to be much more consistent.
New England needs to prove the Pittsburgh performance wasn't simply one good Sunday.
This is a sneaky important game.
ARIZONA CARDINALS AT SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS
4:05 PM ET — FOX
49ers -8.5 | Total 47.5
HERE'S MY TEAM TO WATCH: SAN FRANCISCO
I'm with you on this one.
If the 49ers aren't moving up the power rankings after Sunday — assuming they handle business against Arizona — then the rankings are becoming more about preseason reputation than what is actually happening on the field.
San Francisco 49ers is 2-0.
Brock Purdy is completing over 80% of his passes and has five touchdown passes through two games. Christian McCaffrey has already scored twice on the ground.
Against Miami, the 49ers scored touchdowns on their first five possessions and won 35-13. Purdy threw for 287 yards and two touchdowns while adding another touchdown on the ground.
That's not smoke.
That's production.
BUT THERE'S A PROBLEM
Bosa suffered a calf injury during Thursday's practice and is expected to miss multiple weeks — Kyle Shanahan confirmed it, and he actually shows up on the injury report with both a calf and a knee issue, with the team reportedly still deciding whether IR is the right call.
That's a legitimate loss.
San Francisco also has Demarcus Robinson ruled out with an ankle injury.
But here's the thing:
The 49ers are deep enough and playing well enough that I don't think one injury should erase what we've seen from them.
They're currently among the league's best teams in both offensive and defensive efficiency, according to early-season success-rate measurements.
WHY THIS GAME MATTERS
This is a classic "don't screw it up" game.
Arizona Cardinals just got embarrassed by Seattle.
San Francisco is at home.
The 49ers are 2-0.
They're favored by 8.5.
This is the kind of game where a dominant performance could cause a significant power-ranking jump.
Betting angle: 49ers -8.5, Total 47.5. The interesting question isn't whether San Francisco can win. It's whether Arizona can stay within the number. And that's where Trey McBride becomes extremely important. He already has 17 catches for 136 yards and two touchdowns this season.
MINNESOTA VIKINGS AT TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS
4:05 PM ET — FOX
Buccaneers +1.5 | Total 42.5
Tampa Bay Buccaneers is 0-2 and is another team that needs to get something going immediately.
Minnesota Vikings's defense has already shown it can make life miserable for opposing offenses.
This could turn into a field-position game.
WHY IT MATTERS
Tampa cannot afford to start 0-3.
Minnesota has an opportunity to move to 2-1 and make the NFC North race more interesting.
LAS VEGAS RAIDERS AT NEW ORLEANS SAINTS
4:25 PM ET — CBS
Saints -3 to -3.5 | Total 43.5
The
New Orleans Saints are finally home.
New Orleans is preparing for its home opener against
Las Vegas Raiders, and this is a game where both teams are trying to figure out exactly what they have.
The Saints have been dealing with a lengthy injury report, so depth will matter.
WHY IT MATTERS
This is one of those games that can disappear nationally but matter tremendously inside the division standings.
Neither team wants to give away a winnable home game.
BALTIMORE RAVENS AT DALLAS COWBOYS
4:25 PM ET — CBS
Ravens -3.5 | Total 52.5
INTERNATIONAL GAME — RIO DE JANEIRO
This is the first-ever NFL regular season game played in Brazil, and it could be one of the most entertaining games of the entire Sunday slate.
Baltimore Ravens needs to rebound.
Dallas Cowboys is coming off an explosive victory over Washington.
Dak Prescott threw four touchdown passes in Dallas' 37-20 victory and became the Cowboys' all-time leader in touchdown passes, passing Tony Romo's franchise mark.
Now Dak gets Lamar Jackson.
WHY IT MATTERS
Baltimore doesn't want to fall behind in the AFC after losing its previous game.
Dallas wants to prove the Washington game wasn't just a one-week offensive explosion.
And because this is an international game, preparation and travel become another variable.
Betting angle: Ravens -3.5, Total 52.5 — the highest total on Sunday's board. Vegas expects points. Weather is a genuine unknown here too, since neither team has a real history playing in this specific stadium at this time of year.
LOS ANGELES RAMS AT DENVER BRONCOS
8:20 PM ET — NBC
Broncos +2.5 | Total 44.5
Sunday Night Football closes with a matchup between two teams that were expected to be serious contenders entering this season.
The
Los Angeles Rams are 1-1.
Denver Broncos is 1-1.
Both teams have already experienced the "what the hell was THAT?" portion of the season.
Los Angeles got itself back on track last week, while Denver rallied against Jacksonville.
INJURY TO WATCH
Puka Nacua is doubtful with a hip/groin injury — Sean McVay said this week he wasn't making great progress in his recovery, though the team maintains it isn't a long-term concern and they're simply being cautious.
The Rams already showed last week that they can function without him, but losing a receiver of that caliber changes the equation.
WHY IT MATTERS
This is a heavyweight game disguised as a Week 3 matchup.
The winner leaves Sunday 2-1.
The loser is 1-2.
And suddenly we're talking about which team actually belongs in the NFC/AFC contender conversation.
SO WHO SHOULD BE MOVING UP?
San Francisco 49ers
This is my biggest upward candidate.
They're 2-0.
Purdy is playing efficient football.
McCaffrey is producing.
The offense is scoring.
The defense is making plays.
And they've already beaten the Rams and Dolphins.
The Bosa injury is real, but it doesn't erase the first two weeks.
If San Francisco beats Arizona convincingly, I have no problem moving the 49ers substantially higher on our own rankings.
And honestly, the 49ers are starting to look like the team nobody wants to see in January.
Not because of hype.
Because of how difficult they are to match up with.
OTHER TEAMS I WANT TO WATCH MOVE UP
Seattle Seahawks
2-0.
Defense looks nasty.
They just destroyed Arizona.
Drew Lock and Jaxon Smith-Njigba are giving the offense enough.
If they beat Washington convincingly, Seattle becomes much harder to dismiss.
Cincinnati Bengals
2-0.
Joe Burrow and Ja'Marr Chase are producing.
And the defense has been better than expected.
A win over Pittsburgh puts Cincinnati at 3-0.
That's not a fluke anymore.
Kansas City Chiefs
2-0.
Mahomes just threw for 382 yards and three touchdowns.
Kansas City isn't going anywhere.
The question is whether they can become the team everybody expected them to be before the season.
WHO SHOULD BE IN PANIC MODE?
Miami Dolphins
0-2.
And now they get Kansas City.
The schedule doesn't care about your feelings.
An 0-3 start would put Miami in a serious hole.
Los Angeles Chargers
0-2.
Now they have Buffalo.
That's about as difficult a place as you can go when you're trying to save a season before it starts getting away.
Indianapolis Colts
0-2.
Nine straight losses dating back to last season.
The Houston game feels enormous.
Tennessee Titans
0-2.
Now they play the Giants, who are dealing with the loss of Jaxson Dart.
This is the type of game Tennessee absolutely has to view as an opportunity.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
0-2.
Home against Minnesota.
Another game where the word "must" isn't mathematically accurate — but you know what I mean.
THE BIGGER PICTURE
We're only two weeks into the season.
Nobody should be handing out playoff tickets yet.
But Week 3 is where the NFL starts separating "we had a good Sunday" from "we might actually be good."
The Bills and 49ers are already generating that conversation after opening 2-0, and San Francisco has been particularly impressive statistically.
The 49ers have a chance Sunday to make that argument even louder.
And that's what I'm watching.
Not just who wins.
Who changes the way we have to think about them.
Because by the time we get to Week 4, the preseason expectations are going to mean a hell of a lot less than what these teams have actually shown us.
And right now?
San Francisco is one of the teams making the strongest case that the preseason projections were wrong.
