All 32 teams are at 53. More than 1,100 players were displaced today, and the word that matters in every report you'll read tonight is "initial."
Because the rosters aren't finished. Waiver claims process at 1:00 p.m. ET tomorrow, practice squad signings follow at 6:00 p.m. ET, and the fantasy landscape that exists on Tuesday morning will not be the one that exists right now.
Here's what actually happened, what the reports are getting wrong, and where the fantasy consequences are.
🚨 The Biggest Story Of The Day Isn't A Cut
Aaron Donald is coming out of retirement.
Hours before the deadline, the Rams announced the return of the three-time Defensive Player of the Year on a one-year deal worth $20 million that can escalate to $30 million. He's 35, hasn't played since January 2024, and walked away after the 2023 season with eight first-team All-Pro selections and ten straight Pro Bowls.
The reason he's back is the man Los Angeles traded for earlier this year: Myles Garrett. Between them, Donald and Garrett have five Defensive Player of the Year awards and 236.5 career sacks.
The Rams were already Super Bowl LXI favourites at +500 with a win total of 11.5, tied for the highest in the league. They just added a Hall of Fame interior rusher next to a Hall of Fame edge.
Fantasy impact: 🔵 IDP and defense. If you stream defenses, the Rams just became a weekly consideration rather than a matchup play. And every quarterback facing them got harder to trust — worth checking against the Mismatch Machine before you set a Week 1 lineup.
🏈 Will Levis Waived — Not Released
Tennessee moved on from Will Levis, and the distinction matters more than most coverage is admitting.
He was waived, not released. The Titans had been shopping him for some time and couldn't find a trade partner, per Ian Rapoport.
Levis was the 33rd overall pick in 2023 and went 5-16 as a starter. Tennessee also cut Hendon Hooker, which leaves Cam Ward and Mitch Trubisky as the only quarterbacks on the roster.
The Titans' cut list ran deep beyond the quarterbacks: KJ Osborn, Cordell Volson — who'd been favoured to win the right guard job before rookie Fernando Carmona beat him out — plus Michael Carter, D'Ernest Johnson, Kalel Mullings and Khalen Saunders.
Fantasy impact: 🟡 Superflex and dynasty watch. Nobody's drafting Levis in a standard league. But a quarterback with real starting experience and a big arm becomes genuinely interesting the moment a starter goes down somewhere. Stash-and-watch, and the landing spot decides everything.
😳 Dallas Waives Jaydon Blue — And The Real Story Is Who Replaced Him
The most surprising cut of the day, and the one most fantasy coverage is framing backwards.
The Cowboys waived Jaydon Blue, their fifth-round pick from 2025, one week after he led the team with 15 carries for 75 yards against Arizona. He finished the preseason with 23 carries for a team-high 94 yards.
Two things got him cut. Fumbling followed him through camp. And more importantly:
Malik Davis won the RB2 job outright with a strong camp.
That is the fantasy story, not Blue. Blue entered camp as the favourite to back up Javonte Williams and lost the competition on the field. If you're drafting this week, Malik Davis is the name that just gained value — he's the handcuff in a backfield where the starter carries a real injury history.
Dallas also waived seventh-rounder Phil Mafah from the same draft class, and released veteran edge rusher Sam Williams despite $2 million guaranteed signed in March.
And on the other side of the ledger, the Cowboys acquired offensive tackle Broderick Jones from Pittsburgh. Better protection for Dak Prescott is a quiet boost to everyone catching passes in that offense.
Fantasy impact: 🟠 Blue is a landing-spot watch. Davis is an actual add. Blue has one accrued season, so he goes through waivers rather than straight to free agency — and if he clears, he's practice-squad eligible.
🔥 Green Bay's Backfield Is The Biggest Fantasy Development
Not a cut, and the most consequential move of the weekend for fantasy managers.
The Packers acquired Kaleb Johnson from Pittsburgh for a 2028 sixth-round pick — and the trade became dramatically more significant when Josh Jacobs was placed on the commissioner's exempt list.
Green Bay didn't make that trade out of boredom. They bought running back insurance at a moment when their starter's availability is genuinely uncertain, and a player on the exempt list does not count against the 53.
Fantasy impact: 🔥 MAJOR. If you're drafting in the next few days, Johnson's stock moved several rounds and the industry hasn't caught up. This is exactly the kind of news that rewards people who check the transaction wire before they draft rather than after.

💥 Seattle Cuts Trevon Diggs Eleven Days After Signing Him
The strangest sequence of the day. Seattle released former All-Pro corner Trevon Diggs, who had signed on August 19. The Seahawks also released former first-round pick Noah Igbinoghene.
Fantasy impact: 🔵 IDP watch. Name recognition alone makes him relevant in deep IDP formats if somebody hands him a starting job. Landing spot matters far more than the résumé.
🚨 Houston Signs Zay Jones And Sterling Shepard, Then Cuts Both Nine Days Later
Both veterans signed on August 21. Both were gone by today.
This is the cleanest lesson of cutdown day, and it's worth internalising before you make a draft-day decision off a depth chart: a veteran signing does not mean a role. Sometimes it means a body for camp. Sometimes it's competition. And sometimes a team simply changes its mind before Week 1.
It's the same principle that makes goal-line usage more reliable than a name — jobs get assigned, and reputations don't.
Fantasy impact: 🟡 Watch the landing spot. Both have four-plus accrued seasons, so they're free agents immediately and can sign anywhere tonight. Neither is a waiver priority, but a thin receiver room somewhere changes that quickly.
🏈 The Giants Keep Odell Beckham Jr. And Najee Harris
New York's receiver room came in at five: Malik Nabers, Malachi Fields, Darnell Mooney, Darius Slayton and Odell Beckham Jr.
Beckham making a 53-man roster in 2026 means the Giants believe he can contribute — and with only five receivers carried, there's a genuine path to situational work.
They also kept Najee Harris, who signed less than two weeks ago following last season's Achilles injury.
OBJ: 🟡 Deep-league watch. Nobody should expect 2014. But roster spots are information.
Harris: 🟢 Fantasy watch. The question was never whether he'd make it — it's how much work he's physically ready to absorb coming off an Achilles. That's a injury report question every week, not a draft-day one.
🐬 Miami Adds Kyle McCord
Miami acquired Kyle McCord from Green Bay, expected to back up Malik Willis.
Fantasy impact: 🟡 Superflex and dynasty only. Quarterback depth becomes enormously valuable the moment injuries start.
⚠️ Cleveland: Dillon Gabriel To IR With Return Designation
The rookie won't disappear from the organisation, but he isn't available now. Cleveland kept rookie Taylen Green on the initial 53, which buys Green development reps while Gabriel is out.
Fantasy impact: 🟡 Dynasty and superflex. Neither is a standard starter today.
🚨 The Rule That Burns Fantasy Managers Every Year
"Released" and "waived" are not the same word, and the difference decides who can sign where.
Fewer than four accrued seasons → the player is waived. He goes through the waiver system and any team can claim him, in reverse order of the 2026 draft. Jaydon Blue has one accrued season. Will Levis has three. Both go to waivers.
Four or more accrued seasons → he's released and becomes a free agent immediately. Zay Jones and Sterling Shepard can sign tonight.
So when a report says "Player X released," don't assume he can sign anywhere. Frequently he can't.

- 1:00 p.m. ET Monday — waiver claims process. Priority follows the 2026 draft order, so the Raiders hold the first claim and Tennessee sits at No. 4.
- 6:00 p.m. ET Monday — practice squad signings open.
And practice squad does not mean irrelevant. Teams elevate practice-squad players during the season, and rival clubs can sign them directly to an active roster. Don't delete anybody from your watch list tonight.

The biggest mistake tonight is chasing every recognisable name who got cut.
Talent plus opportunity plus landing spot is the equation, and the first term is the least important of the three. Half of all fantasy busts were never getting the touches — not because they couldn't play, but because they were fourth in line at a position where a staff had already decided who eats.
That's why Malik Davis winning a job matters more than Jaydon Blue losing one, and why Kaleb Johnson changing teams is worth more than any veteran clearing waivers.
