SATURDAY NIGHT NFL PRESEASON RECAP: THE FANTASY SIGNALS ARE GETTING LOUDER

By Lauren Hayes Β· August 23, 2026

Saturday was the monster of NFL preseason Week 2: 10 games, a whole lot of backups, and just enough meaningful playing time to give fantasy managers some information they can actually use.

And that's the key.

We're not counting touchdowns and screaming β€œSLEEPER!” every time somebody catches a 40-yard pass against guys who might be selling insurance by September.

We're looking at usage, quarterback situations, roster battles, explosive plays and what actually changed after Saturday.

Here are the biggest takeaways.

JA'MORI MACLIN JUST MADE THIS INTERESTING

The Buffalo Bills absolutely hammered Cleveland 31-7, but the fantasy story was rookie receiver Ja'Mori Maclin.

Maclin finished with 108 receiving yards and a touchdown, continuing a preseason that is becoming increasingly difficult to ignore.

This isn't necessarily a reason to draft him in the middle rounds.

It is a reason to know his name.

Maclin is showing the exact combination fantasy managers want to see from a late-round rookie target: explosive plays plus repeated opportunity.

He's officially on the draft-watch list.

Shedeur Sanders wasn't terrible β€” but he didn't exactly win the job

Cleveland's quarterback competition remains messy.

Sanders performed better than Deshaun Watson, but Cleveland's offense managed only seven points while Buffalo's backups repeatedly found ways to move the football.

For fantasy purposes, the important question isn't whether Sanders looked better for a few drives.

It's whether Cleveland gives him enough first-team opportunity to become relevant.

Right now, that's still unsettled.

JACK STRAND CAME OUT OF NOWHERE

Atlanta destroyed Indianapolis 34-6, and the most unexpected fantasy name of Saturday might have been Falcons rookie quarterback Jack Strand.

The undrafted rookie from Minnesota State-Moorhead went 12-of-17 for 212 yards and a touchdown, then added a 16-yard rushing touchdown.

That's not a typo.

212 passing yards.

A passing TD.

A rushing TD.

He also connected with rookie Cash Jones for a 13-yard touchdown.

Strand is making a serious case for Atlanta's No. 3 quarterback job behind Michael Penix Jr. and Tua Tagovailoa.

Fantasy verdict

Probably irrelevant in normal redraft leagues.

But extremely relevant if you're tracking deep dynasty leagues, quarterback rooms and emergency fantasy value.

And that's exactly what preseason is for.

J.J. McCARTHY GAVE US SOMETHING TO TALK ABOUT β€” JUST NOT EVERYTHING WE WANTED

Baltimore beat Minnesota 13-3, and Minnesota's quarterback situation produced one of the more interesting performances of the day.

J.J. McCarthy went 5-of-10 for 81 yards, including a 50-yard completion to Tai Felton.

But he also missed a wide-open receiver on fourth down.

That matters.

McCarthy didn't have a disaster of a game, but he also didn't come out and completely grab the fantasy community by the throat.

Tai Felton is the name to watch

A 50-yard reception immediately puts the rookie receiver back on the radar.

The Vikings don't need him to become Justin Jefferson overnight.

They need him to establish a meaningful role.

Saturday provided another reason to keep watching.

JOE FAGNANO IS MAKING THIS RAVENS QB ROOM VERY INTERESTING

Baltimore's undrafted rookie quarterback Joe Fagnano continued his ridiculous preseason.

He completed 15-of-20 passes for 123 yards and a touchdown against Minnesota. Through two preseason games, Fagnano now has 347 passing yards, two touchdowns and only one interception.

That's legitimate preseason production.

He's not threatening Lamar Jackson's job.

Let's not get insane.

But he's making the Ravens' quarterback depth extremely interesting.

And if you're playing preseason DFS or deep dynasty formats, this is exactly the kind of player who deserves attention.

THE GIANTS' RUNNING BACK SITUATION JUST GOT MORE COMPLICATED

The Giants crushed Miami 26-3, and the game gave us another interesting piece of information about their running-back room.

Devin Singletary scored a touchdown and rushed for 40 yards, while Tyrone Tracy Jr. had a costly fumble.

Meanwhile, Cam Skattebo remains part of the equation while recovering from injury.

That makes this one of those depth charts where fantasy managers need to resist the urge to declare a winner too early.

But Singletary helped himself

The veteran looked reliable.

Tracy hurt himself.

And Skattebo's return will eventually force the Giants to make some decisions.

This is a backfield worth monitoring closely once regular-season snap distributions become clearer.

JAMEIS WINSTON DID EXACTLY WHAT JAMEIS WINSTON DOES

Winston started for New York and threw for 150 yards, while also running for a touchdown.

The Giants moved the football extremely well, piling up 390 total yards to Miami's 102.

But remember who they were playing.

Miami rested a number of key players.

So don't suddenly start drafting Winston.

The fantasy takeaway is simply that New York's backup quarterback situation looks functional, and Winston's rushing ability adds another layer of fantasy usefulness if an injury ever opens the door.

THE RAMS JUST TURNED THE BACKUP QB BATTLE INTO A REAL STORY

Los Angeles obliterated New Orleans 34-0.

Stetson Bennett IV threw for 181 yards and ran for two touchdowns, while rookie Ty Simpson added 73 passing yards.

Bennett's performance is significant because the Rams are evaluating their quarterback depth.

He didn't simply hand the ball off all night.

He produced through the air and on the ground.

Jarquez Hunter also deserves a mention

Hunter rushed for 68 yards and a touchdown.

That's not enough to suddenly make him a fantasy draft target.

It is enough to put him on the late-round and waiver-wire radar if the Rams' running-back hierarchy starts changing.

EAGLES-PATRIOTS: TANNER McKEE MAY HAVE WON THE BACKUP QB ARGUMENT

New England beat Philadelphia 24-21, but Philadelphia actually got an encouraging performance from Tanner McKee.

McKee completed 16-of-22 passes for 173 yards and two touchdowns, while Andy Dalton struggled, going 3-of-10 for 44 yards.

That is a significant gap.

If you're tracking backup quarterbacks, McKee is one of the bigger Saturday winners.

Philadelphia's running game also looked better

Will Shipley had several useful plays, while Carson Steele also found the end zone.

But don't confuse preseason workload with regular-season hierarchy.

Philadelphia rested its primary stars.

The useful information here is which reserves are separating themselves.

AND THEN THERE'S KYLE WILLIAMS

New England receiver Kyle Williams caught a 69-yard touchdown from Tommy DeVito.

DeVito finished 8-of-15 for 151 yards and a touchdown, while adding 44 rushing yards.

Williams is becoming one of those preseason names that keeps appearing in the right places.

He's not automatically a fantasy starter.

But he's accumulating the kind of evidence that can turn a player from β€œcamp name” into late-round draft consideration.

That's exactly where preseason research should take you.

COWBOYS 34, CARDINALS 13: JOE MILTON IS MAKING DALLAS' QB ROOM FUN

Dallas demolished Arizona 34-13, and Joe Milton III led the Cowboys to another strong preseason performance.

Milton's physical ability has never been the question.

The question has always been consistency and whether he can turn that physical talent into quarterback play that actually works.

Saturday was another positive data point.

For fantasy managers, he's a deep-dynasty stash, not somebody you should be reaching for in standard drafts.

THE BETTING CARD: SATURDAY WAS A BLOODBATH FOR THE NUMBERS

This is where things get interesting.

According to the posted preseason spreads and totals, Saturday produced several dramatic line results.

Saturday's notable results

Detroit 17, Washington 13

Lions -1.5 covered

Total 36.5 β€” UNDER

Buffalo 31, Cleveland 7

Bills +3 covered

Total 36.5 β€” OVER

Baltimore 13, Minnesota 3

Ravens +3.5 covered

Total 36.5 β€” UNDER

Atlanta 34, Indianapolis 6

Falcons +3.5 covered

Total 36.5 β€” OVER

New York Giants 26, Miami 3

Giants -3 covered

Total 36.5 β€” UNDER

Dallas 34, Arizona 13

Cowboys +1.5 covered

Total 37.5 β€” OVER

That's the preseason betting lesson in one giant flashing neon sign:

PLAYING TIME MATTERS MORE THAN TEAM QUALITY.

Atlanta was an underdog.

Buffalo was an underdog.

Baltimore was an underdog.

Dallas was an underdog.

And all four won outright.

Why?

Because preseason lines are extraordinarily sensitive to who actually plays and how long they play.

If you're betting preseason football, the depth chart is basically your injury report, weather report and stock market combined.

THE BIGGEST FANTASY WINNERS FROM SATURDAY

πŸ“ˆ Ja'Mori Maclin

108 yards and a touchdown.

The rookie continues to make noise.

πŸ“ˆ Tanner McKee

16-for-22, 173 yards, two touchdowns.

The Eagles backup QB competition is becoming much clearer.

πŸ“ˆ Kyle Williams

A 69-yard touchdown keeps his name firmly in the conversation.

πŸ“ˆ Joe Fagnano

347 yards and two touchdowns through two preseason games.

πŸ“ˆ Jack Strand

212 yards passing plus a rushing touchdown.

πŸ“ˆ Tai Felton

The 50-yard connection with McCarthy is exactly the type of explosive play fantasy managers need to notice.

THE BIGGEST FANTASY QUESTIONS AFTER SATURDAY

What happens with the Giants' running backs?

Skattebo, Singletary and Tracy remain a situation to monitor.

Who is Minnesota's WR2?

Tai Felton just gave us another piece of the puzzle.

Is Tanner McKee Philadelphia's clear QB2?

Saturday certainly moved the needle.

Can Kyle Williams force his way into New England's receiver rotation?

He keeps giving the Patriots a reason to consider it.

Who becomes Atlanta's QB3?

Jack Strand just made that decision harder.

SUNDAY: ONE GAME LEFT

And then there is one final game to close Week 2.

SEAHAWKS AT TITANS β€” 8:00 PM ET

Seattle Seahawks at Tennessee Titans

Sunday, August 23

8:00 PM ET

FOX

Seattle enters at 0-1 in the preseason, while Tennessee is 1-0. The current market has Tennessee favored by roughly 4.5 points with a total around 37.5.

This is the final piece of Week 2.

Fantasy angle

Watch the quarterback rotations.

Watch Seattle's young receivers.

Watch Tennessee's running-back usage.

And most importantly, watch who gets extended work.

Betting angle

Don't blindly bet the Titans because they're favored.

Don't blindly bet the Seahawks because they're the defending Super Bowl champions.

Find out who is actually playing.

That's the entire preseason betting game.

THE REAL FANTASY TAKEAWAY

Saturday gave us something more valuable than a bunch of fantasy points.

It gave us information.

Ja'Mori Maclin is making noise.

Tanner McKee is separating himself.

Kyle Williams keeps showing up.

Joe Fagnano won't stop producing.

Jack Strand came out of nowhere.

Tai Felton showed explosive potential.

And several running-back competitions became more complicated.

That's what we're looking for with two weeks of preseason football behind us.

Not the guy who scored three touchdowns against the third-string defense.

We're looking for the guy whose role changed.

Because once September arrives, those roles are what turn into fantasy points.

And after Saturday, we're starting to have a much better idea of which preseason performances are real signals β€” and which ones were just August being August.
