Alright. I need everybody to sit down for a second because I have an idea, and I promise you it is not a crazy one, even though it involves the New York Jets making a smart, obvious, low-risk decision, which historically is not something this organization is known for.
Odell Beckham Jr. got released by the Giants today. Zero catches in three games, 20 snaps, one target, the whole thing was a bust, fine, we all saw it coming. That part is not the story. The story is that he is now a free agent sitting there for anybody to sign, and my football team, the team I have watched give away leads, quarterbacks, and my will to live for the better part of two decades, happens to be down to two real receivers on the roster right now.
Two. Garrett Wilson and prayer.
LET ME SHOW YOU HOW THIN THIS ACTUALLY IS
Adonai Mitchell was a healthy scratch in Week 3. Inactive. Not hurt, just not active, which on this roster apparently counts as a luxury we can afford. That left the Jets so shallow at receiver that they had to elevate three practice squad guys just to field a game, including Sterling Shepard, who I say this with love, is not walking through that door as your WR2 in the year of our Lord 2026.
So do not tell me there is no room. There is a wide open, gaping hole at receiver 2 on this roster right now, and it has a "help wanted" sign on it in neon.
WHY THIS ISN'T EVEN A REACH
Here is the part that should make this an easy call for once. He is a free agent. Nobody has to give up a pick, nobody has to restructure a damn thing, you sign him to whatever minimum-plus-incentives paper the Giants had him on and you find out in about two weeks whether the tank still has gas in it.
And before anybody in the group chat says "he barely played for the Giants so what makes you think he plays here," I want you to actually think about that situation for one second. Twenty snaps across three weeks behind Malik Nabers, Malachi Fields and Darnell Mooney. That is not "OBJ is washed," that is "OBJ was the fourth option on a team that did not need a fourth option." We are not that team. We currently need a second and possibly a third option, urgently, like yesterday.
His own camp already said a Giants practice squad stint is off the table, he wants to actually play, not collect a per diem and watch from the side. Good. We have snaps. We have targets. We have, and I cannot stress this enough, an actual need that his last team did not.
OKAY BUT LET ME BE HONEST WITH YOU FOR A SECOND
Nobody in the actual league has reported the Jets are even calling him. I want to be straight with you, because I am not going to sit here and pretend I have some inside track that I don't. Right now the real, actual signal in the league is pointing at the Rams, who need a body behind an injured Puka Nacua, and Jarvis Landry, his old teammate out there, has already said Beckham would be open to that reunion. That is the closest thing to a real domino falling that exists at this exact moment.
So this is me putting it out there, not me telling you it is happening. This is the take. This is the sicko fan brain going "why the hell not us," and I am fully aware that "why not us" has been the Jets fan mantra since roughly the Clinton administration and it has worked out great for us zero times.
But you know what, that has never stopped me before, so here we are.
THE ACTUAL FOOTBALL CASE, BECAUSE I DO HAVE ONE
Geno Smith just threw for 321 yards and three touchdowns with no picks against Detroit and still lost the game because the defense could not get a stop and the receiver room outside of Wilson is held together with tape and vibes. You are telling me a guy who can still get open on a slant and take a hit is not an upgrade over whatever combination of practice squad call-ups we are trotting out there right now? Come on.
Is he the 2015 version of himself? Obviously not, nobody is asking for that. Is he a better bet than what is currently occupying that depth chart spot? I would put actual money on it, and the transaction wire says that spot is currently very available.
SO HERE'S MY ASK
Somebody in that building, pick up the damn phone. It costs nothing. It risks nothing. Worst case he is exactly what he looked like in Giants camp and you cut him in three weeks having lost absolutely nothing. Best case you just added a guy who has caught passes from three Hall of Fame level quarterbacks and knows how to get open against zone coverage, for free, in September, while your receiver room is being held up by a rookie tight end and a prayer circle.
I am not saying it is happening. I am saying it should be, and if it is not, I want an explanation, because the free agent board has his name sitting right there and somebody in that building has a phone that works.
The depth chart and the injury report will tell you the second Mitchell is back or somebody else actually gets healthy. Until then, my football team has a hole, there is a guy sitting on the street who has caught more real passes than half our room combined, and I would like somebody to explain to me why that is a hard decision.
Sign the guy. Worst case, it is September and it did not work. Best case, you fixed a real problem for the price of a phone call. This is not complicated, and I refuse to accept that it is.
