NFL PRESEASON FRIDAY NIGHT BETTING GUIDE

No more “we'll see what happens in Week 3.”

No more 90-man rosters.

No more preseason football after this weekend.

And, most importantly, no more pretending every preseason game should be analyzed like a regular-season matchup.

Tonight is about jobs.

It is about backups fighting for roster spots, quarterbacks trying to prove they belong, receivers trying to separate themselves from the guy standing next to them on the depth chart, offensive linemen trying not to get replaced, and coaches deciding which players they're willing to trust when the games actually start counting.

And if you're betting tonight, that's exactly how you need to look at it.

WELCOME TO THE NFL'S LAST AUDITION

Friday night is the busiest night of the final preseason weekend, with 10 games on the schedule.

But don't make the mistake of looking at the standings, records or team names and assuming the better NFL team is automatically the better preseason bet.

It isn't.

The preseason is about situations.

Who is playing?

How long are they playing?

Who is trying to win a job?

Who has already secured his roster spot?

Who is protecting a veteran?

Who is auditioning for another team?

Who is playing behind an offensive line that is mostly going to be gone?

That's where the money is.

And tonight's slate is loaded with exactly those situations.

The NFL has changed the calendar this year, and it matters.

Teams must reduce their rosters to 53 players by 6 p.m. ET Sunday, August 30.

That's a massive change from the traditional Tuesday cutdown schedule.

In other words:

Tonight's games are followed by one of the most stressful weekends of the NFL calendar.

Teams have roughly 48 hours to make some brutally difficult decisions.

Approximately 1,184 players will lose roster spots as teams go from roughly 90 players to 53.

Think about that for a second.

For some players, tonight is not meaningless football.

It's a job interview being broadcast on television.

And THAT is where preseason betting gets interesting.

DON'T BET THE TEAM. BET THE MOTIVATION.

This is probably the single most important preseason betting rule.

If Team A is playing its starters for a quarter while Team B is playing its third-string quarterback for most of the night, I don't care which team is better.

I want the team with the advantage in meaningful snaps.

But there's another wrinkle tonight:

Some players aren't necessarily trying to win the game.

They're trying to make the roster.

That changes everything.

A backup running back might get 12 carries because the coaching staff wants one final evaluation.

A wide receiver on the bubble might suddenly receive eight targets.

A quarterback competing for QB2 might play three quarters.

A defensive end fighting for the final roster spot might play into the fourth quarter.

Those players can be incredibly valuable for fantasy and DFS purposes — even if their teams aren't particularly good.

My favorite markets:

1. First-half spreads

I would much rather bet a first-half number than a full-game spread when I have a strong read on playing time.

Why?

Because once the starters and top backups disappear, you're basically betting on players you've never heard of against players your fantasy league commissioner has never heard of.

That's not exactly a recipe for confidence.

2. First-half totals

This is another market I like tonight.

If two teams are expected to use their more experienced offensive personnel early, the first-half total can be much more predictable than the full-game number.

3. Team totals

If I know one offense is going to have its quarterback and primary skill players on the field longer than expected, I'd rather isolate that offense than bet the entire game.

4. Live betting

This is where preseason football gets REALLY interesting.

Watch the first 10 minutes.

Watch who is actually playing.

Watch the substitutions.

Then bet.

Don't blindly fire on a line that was posted three days ago.

This is also one of the most important nights of the entire preseason for fantasy football.

Not because you're going to draft some random preseason hero who scores three touchdowns tonight.

You're looking for role changes.

That's the information that matters.

If a veteran running back doesn't play and the coaching staff gives his backup 15 carries, that's information.

If a supposedly crowded receiver room suddenly features one young receiver playing with the second-team quarterback and running with the starters, that's information.

If a tight end suddenly becomes heavily involved in two-minute and red-zone packages, that's information.

If a quarterback plays substantially longer than anticipated, that's information.

The box score is only part of the story.

Snap distribution is the story.

Quarterbacks are especially important tonight.

A quarterback fighting for QB2 or QB3 isn't simply trying to complete passes.

He's trying to demonstrate:

• command of the offense


• pocket awareness


• decision-making


• accuracy


• mobility


• ability to operate under pressure


• two-minute execution


• red-zone efficiency

And there's another angle fantasy players should care about:

A quarterback competition can completely change the fantasy value of an entire offense.

If a young quarterback unexpectedly wins a job, suddenly the value of the receivers, tight ends and running backs around him can change.

Tonight can provide the final piece of that puzzle.

Because the players who stood out tonight aren't necessarily the players who score fantasy points immediately.

Some will be cut.

Some will land on practice squads.

Some will be claimed on waivers.

Some will become injuries-away-from-a-starting-job lottery tickets.

And some will go from “Who the hell is that?” to legitimate fantasy football names in about 72 hours.

That's why you don't stop paying attention after the final whistle.

The real preseason information cycle continues through cutdown day and the waiver wire.

I'm approaching these as preseason leans, not pretending there's some magical lock that comes with a team logo next to it.

🔥 BEST BET TYPE: FIRST-HALF SPREADS

The strongest preseason strategy tonight is identifying the teams that have the biggest advantage in quality snaps.

If one team has its starting quarterback and significant first-team offensive personnel playing while the opponent is rolling out backups, I want the first half.

I don't care what happens in the fourth quarter.

I want the advantage while it exists.

Preseason finale games can become ugly late.

Coaches aren't necessarily interested in turning the fourth quarter into an offensive showcase.

Quarterbacks are inexperienced.

Offensive lines are shuffled.

Play-calling gets vanilla.

And once you get into third- and fourth-string players, offensive efficiency can disappear.

So unless I have a very specific reason to expect points, I'm starting my research on the UNDER.

Find the game where one team is clearly playing its meaningful offensive players longer.

Then watch the live number.

If the market hasn't adjusted enough for the personnel advantage, that's where you attack.

Forget the final scores.

Seriously.

A 27-10 preseason victory doesn't automatically mean anything.

A quarterback completing 8-of-11 for 87 yards doesn't automatically mean anything.

A running back scoring two touchdowns against third-string defenders doesn't automatically mean anything.

Instead, watch:

WHO PLAYED WITH WHOM.

That's the information that can win your fantasy draft.

That's the information that can identify DFS value.

That's the information that can move betting markets.

And that's the information that can tell you which players are about to become fantasy-relevant when September arrives.

Yeah, I'm going there.

My prediction for tonight isn't one particular team winning a meaningless preseason football game.

My prediction is that tonight creates several fantasy football storylines that will matter much more than the final scores.

There will be a running back who suddenly gets meaningful work.

A receiver who separates himself.

A quarterback who changes a roster decision.

A tight end who earns a bigger role.

A defensive player who becomes relevant because somebody ahead of him gets cut or injured.

And there will be at least a few guys who make you say:

“Why the hell wasn't anybody talking about this guy?”
