HOW IT HAPPENED
First inning. Milwaukee struck right away. Jackson Chourio singled on the first pitch he saw, Christian Yelich tripled him home, and William Contreras followed with an RBI single on the first pitch of his at-bat for a 2-0 lead. No home runs, just contact and pressure.
Fourth inning. Junior Caminero ripped a 112.7 mph line drive that turned into a double, and Jonathan Aranda scored on a Liam Hicks groundout to cut it to 2-1.
Seventh inning. Chourio singled on the first pitch again, this time scoring rookie shortstop Cooper Pratt for a 3-1 lead. That run turned out to be the difference.
Ninth inning. Closer Trevor Megill gave up two one-out singles, Chandler Simpson and Jorge Mateo pulled off a double steal, and Caminero walked to load the bases. Hicks grounded Megill's first pitch to second baseman Brice Turang, who threw to Pratt for the force, and Pratt's relay to first appeared to end the game. Tampa Bay challenged. Replay showed Pratt's right foot coming off the bag as he caught the throw, by a very slight margin, and the call was overturned. Mateo scored to make it 3-2, with the tying run on third and two outs. Megill reset and struck out Jonny DeLuca on a knuckle curve to end it.
THE PITCHING
Jacob Misiorowski came in under scrutiny after two short postseason starts and gave Milwaukee exactly what it needed: five innings, four hits, one run, one walk and three strikeouts on 78 pitches. His first pitch of the night set a record as the fastest pitch thrown in World Series history. He did not miss many bats, but he kept escaping trouble.
The Brewers' bullpen covered the last four innings. Abner Uribe pitched 1.1 scoreless innings, Aaron Ashby struck out three over 1.2 hitless innings, and Megill survived the ninth, allowing one run on two hits and a walk.
For Tampa Bay, Nick Martinez allowed two runs on five hits over five innings with five strikeouts and no walks and took the loss. Steven Matz, Kevin Kelly, Garrett Cleavinger and Cole Sulser covered the rest, and Matz was charged with one run.

Contreras added two hits from a lineup spot that will keep producing chances. For Tampa Bay, Aranda reached four times and Simpson's speed created the ninth-inning chaos, while Caminero's 112.7 mph double was the hardest-hit ball of the night. GAME 1 BETTING RESULTS
Milwaukee was the home favorite and won outright, so the Brewers' moneyline cashed. The one-run margin meant the Rays covered the plus run line and the Brewers did not cover the minus run line. With five total runs and no home runs, the game stayed under the posted total. A tight, low-scoring opener is a reminder of the risk in laying runs with a favorite in October. GAME 2 TONIGHT: WHAT TO KNOW

Odds and lines. Game 2 prices move all day, so we do not freeze them in an article. The current moneyline, run line and total are on the MLB Tonight board, side by side across the market on the MLB heatmap. Turn any price into a win probability with the odds converter.
Our pick. The FantasyDailies call on Game 2, side and total, is on the MLB verdicts page, where it is scored after the final out.
What to watch. Rasmussen against a Brewers lineup that won Game 1 on contact, not power. Henderson against a Rays lineup that put seven hits on the board but went 0 for 6 with runners in scoring position. And Milwaukee's bullpen after Uribe, Ashby and Megill all worked Friday. THE BOTTOM LINE
Milwaukee won Game 1 the way it has won all October: early contact, a starter who did his job and a bullpen that held, barely. Tampa Bay out-hit its own result, stranded every runner it put in scoring position and still nearly stole the opener in the ninth. Game 2 decides whether the Rays head home even or down two. Follow it in the Game Zone, and for everything else this October, start at the MLB hub.
