Congratulations, sports fans. We made it. We've officially entered that weird stretch of the year where absolutely nothing is happening, yet somehow I still find myself opening ESPN every 17 minutes like a psychopath expecting breaking news.
Maybe this is the refresh... Nope. Still nothing. Baseball is on its All-Star break. Football players are just beginning to remember where they left their helmets. The NBA is giving us Summer League games where half the players sound like randomly generated names from a video game, and hockey has disappeared so completely I honestly forgot it existed until I started writing this.
If you're a degenerate sports bettor, this week is basically your version of withdrawal. You start convincing yourself things you would never normally say. "You know... maybe I should look into Korean baseball." "What's the line on professional darts tonight?" "I bet cornhole has value if you really study it." No. Stop it. Go outside. Call your mother. Touch grass. Anything.
The worst part is your fantasy football addiction is already kicking in, but training camp hasn't really started yet. So what are we doing? Mock draft number 37. Reading the same sleeper article for the fifth time.
Watching YouTube videos titled "This Rookie Will WIN Your League!" even though every creator somehow has a different rookie winning every league.
By this point, you've convinced yourself your fourth-string running back is one rolled ankle away from becoming the next fantasy legend. We've all been there. And then there's baseball. I swear every sports network spends this week replaying highlights from the Home Run Derby like it happened during the moon landing. "Here's that 475-foot home run again... in case you missed it the previous 94 times." Thanks.
I was worried I'd forgotten. Even the sports talk shows are running out of material. One guy says, "Who has more pressure this season?" Another says, "I disagree." Cue commercial. Groundbreaking television. Don't get me wrong. Every sports fan needs a breather once in a while. It's probably healthy. But this? This is like opening the refrigerator every ten minutes knowing there isn't anything new inside. You're not hungry. You're just hoping football magically appeared. Thankfully, we're almost there.
NFL training camps are around the corner. Fantasy draft season is about to explode. Position battles will dominate headlines. Every beat writer will tell us someone is in the "best shape of his life," and we'll all irrationally move him up three rounds because apparently looking good in shorts now wins fantasy championships. Life is about to get interesting again. Until then... We'll continue refreshing sports apps every few minutes. We'll pretend we're interested in Summer League. We'll overanalyze training camp photos. And yes... Some of us will probably end up betting professional cornhole. No judgment. See you in football season.
