The Storyline: The Ravens Are in Survival Mode

This was supposed to be one of the more entertaining matchups of Week 9. Instead, Baltimore is dealing with a quarterback disaster that could derail its season.

The JaguarsJacksonville Jaguars come in at 5-2 after dismantling Indianapolis 42-7 on Sunday (box score). Trevor Lawrence threw for 210 yards and three touchdowns on just 10 completions. Jacksonville's offense is clicking, its defense is playing outstanding football, and it sits first in the AFC South.

The RavensBaltimore Ravens, meanwhile, are 4-4 and riding a three-game losing streak: 13-10 at Cleveland, 35-13 to Cincinnati and 36-10 at Buffalo, scoring 33 points total across the three games.

Lamar Jackson is on injured reserve with a thumb injury that needs surgery. Tyler Huntley is out with a toe injury. That leaves undrafted rookie Joe Fagnano, who is also playing through an ankle injury, to make his first NFL start. Kedon Slovis and Austin Reed are the backups.

Help is on the way, just not tonight. Baltimore is finalizing a trade for Jacoby Brissett from Arizona, but he isn't expected to play until the Ravens' next game, Monday, November 16, against the Chargers.

That's quite a predicament when you're facing one of the league's best defenses on a short week. See exactly who is lined up where on the Jaguars depth chart and the Ravens depth chart.

The Matchup That Matters

Jacksonville's defense is allowing just 15.9 points per game and about 77 rushing yards per game. Two of its last four opponents, Cincinnati and Philadelphia, ran for 23 and 22 yards.

That's bad news for Derrick Henry, who has to carry a huge load. Henry has struggled during the losing streak: 58 yards on 17 carries in Cleveland, 45 on 17 against Cincinnati, and 53 on 11 in Buffalo.

The key question: can Baltimore establish Henry early enough to keep Jacksonville's offense off the field? If the Ravens fall behind by two scores, things could get ugly fast.

On the other side, Lawrence gets to attack a Baltimore defense that has allowed 25.4 points per game, including 35 and 36 in its last two games.

The bottom line: Jacksonville has the quarterback advantage, the defensive advantage and the momentum. Baltimore needs a near-perfect game from its defense and a mistake-free night from its rookie quarterback.

Betting Lines and Odds

From our board:

Our side and total are on our pick. Want to see how it plays out first? Run Jaguars-Ravens 10,000 times in the game simulator. Track the number on the line movement board and the NFL odds heat map.

Ten points is a big number to lay on the road in the NFL, but the quarterback gap is too big to ignore. If you'd rather not lay double digits, the NFL Teaser Generator lets you move the line through the key numbers.

Player Props to Watch

These are the markets worth investigating before kickoff. Compare every number on our NFL player props page.

Trevor Lawrence: passing yards and touchdowns

Lawrence is coming off three touchdowns on 14 attempts against Indianapolis, and Baltimore's defense has been leaking points. Look at:

Derrick Henry: rushing yards

Henry is the biggest piece of Baltimore's puzzle. The Ravens have to run the ball, and run it often. Look at:

The problem is the matchup. Jacksonville has been one of the toughest teams in the league to run on.

Zay Flowers: receptions

Flowers is a potential volume play, since Baltimore may need to get the ball out quickly to protect Fagnano. But note the warning sign: he was targeted 5 times in Buffalo and didn't catch any of them. Look at his reception total before chasing a big receiving-yard number.

Parker Washington: receiving yards

An interesting Jacksonville DFS option in an offense that could generate plenty of scoring chances.

Bhayshul Tuten: rushing yards

Tuten ran 16 times for 104 yards and a touchdown against the Colts and added a 55-yard touchdown catch. He's worth a long look if Jacksonville gets ahead and pounds the ball, but he's questionable, so confirm he's active before you lock him in.

Thursday Night DFS: Showdown Strategy

Single-game contests are about the right mix of volume, touchdowns and salary efficiency. Check this week's prices on our NFL DFS value board and build with the lineup tools.

Top DFS targets

  1. Trevor Lawrence: Jacksonville's best quarterback option and an excellent Captain candidate.
  2. Derrick Henry: Baltimore's most dependable weapon and a touchdown threat.
  3. Bhayshul Tuten: if he's active. He had 159 yards from scrimmage and two touchdowns last week.
  4. Zay Flowers: reception volume could give him a floor, but he has to turn targets into catches.
  5. Parker Washington: receiving value in Jacksonville's offense.
  6. Chris Rodriguez Jr.: 6 carries for 41 yards and a touchdown last week, and more work if Tuten sits.
  7. Mark Andrews: touchdown upside if Baltimore stalls between the 20s.
  8. Jacksonville defense: one of the strongest plays on the slate against a rookie making his first start.

Captain/MVP options

Strategy: Don't automatically load up on Jacksonville's passing game. If the Jaguars build a lead, the second half could turn run-heavy. Build around the game script instead of assuming four quarters of passing. Always confirm salaries and eligibility before you lock a lineup.

The Injury Report

Jacksonville

Baltimore

Fantasy impact: Baltimore's quarterback situation is the biggest factor of the night, and Tuten's status decides Jacksonville's backfield. With Tyler Loop on injured reserve, Baltimore's kicking game is another thing to watch. Every update lands on our NFL injury report.

AFC Standings and Playoff Implications

AFC South: Jacksonville is 5-2 and in first place. A win moves the Jaguars to 6-2 and tightens their grip on the division.

AFC North: Baltimore is 4-4 and in fourth place, behind Pittsburgh (6-2), Cincinnati (5-2) and Cleveland (5-3). Another loss would put enormous pressure on the coaching staff and the quarterback plan. See the full picture on our NFL standings.

The FantasyDailies Parlay Corner

Three ways to build it, depending on how aggressive you want to get. Start every one with the side from our pick so your ticket agrees with the house call.

Parlay 1: The conservative approach

Parlay 2: The game-script play

Parlay 3: The longer shot

Final Word

This is a much different Baltimore team without Lamar Jackson. Jacksonville has every chance to control this game from the opening kickoff, and the Ravens are asking an undrafted rookie to solve a defense that has made life miserable for quarterbacks all season.

Henry can keep Baltimore competitive for stretches, but the Ravens need more than a running game to win this one.

Our call on the side and total is on our pick. Run it yourself in the game simulator, and come back after the game for the box score.
