Carolina's long wait ends, and a 37-year-old captain writes his name in history
Twenty years after their only other championship, the Carolina Hurricanes are Stanley Cup champions again. Rod Brind'Amour โ the captain of the 2006 Cup team โ coached this one from the bench, watching his own captain Jordan Staal lead the Canes past the Vegas Golden Knights to lift the oldest trophy in sports for the first time since 2006.
Staal's postseason was one for the ages. At 37, he became the oldest Conn Smythe Trophy winner in NHL history, and tied a mark that dates to 1918 by scoring in each of the first five games of the Final โ joining legends like Maurice Richard and Jean Beliveau. It was the second Cup of his career, 17 years after his first with Pittsburgh in 2009.
The offseason opened with its own headline: Alex Ovechkin โ the NHL's all-time goal king โ returned to Washington, while phenom Gavin McKenna went No. 1 overall to Toronto. A new era is already taking shape.
๐ The puck drops again in early October. Thirty-two teams, one Cup, and a whole summer of anticipation.
