Buying a half point only matters when the number lands. On 3 and 7 it lands often enough to be worth ten or fifteen cents; on most other numbers it is not.

About the half-point calculator
Buying a half point moves a spread or total by 0.5 for a worse price, such as -120 instead of -110. The calculator shows how often that half point actually decides the bet and whether it is worth the extra cost. Moving a spread on or off a key number, like 3 or 7 in the NFL, is worth far more than moving it anywhere else.
