The NFL's Best Free Agents Are Still Sitting There... So What Are We Waiting For?

By Mark Petrozzella ยท July 18, 2026

Every July, NFL fans start convincing themselves their roster is perfect.

It's adorable.

Then training camp starts, somebody pulls a hamstring reaching for Gatorade, another guy tweaks a calf signing autographs, and suddenly every fan base is screaming, "WHY DIDN'T WE SIGN A VETERAN?"

Well... there are still plenty of them.

The craziest part? Some of these names would've broken the internet just a couple of years ago.

Tyreek Hill โ†’ Atlanta Falcons

Call me crazy...

Actually don't. My ex already does.

But I love the idea of Tyreek Hill ending up in Atlanta.

Tua Tagovailoa is already there after this offseason's quarterback shuffle, and if Hill proves he's healthy after the knee injury that ended his 2025 season, why not reunite one of football's fastest quarterback-receiver combinations?

Atlanta doesn't need Peak Tyreek.

They need Defensive Coordinators having panic attacks before kickoff.

Even if he's lost half a step...

...he's still faster than 99.8% of humanity.

Keenan Allen โ†’ Las Vegas Raiders

If I'm the Raiders, I'm making the phone call.

Every young quarterback needs that veteran who runs the right route, catches everything within a five-mile radius, and doesn't panic on third-and-seven.

That's Keenan Allen.

He may not run a 4.3 anymore...

But neither do I.

Difference is nobody is asking me to convert third downs.

Stefon Diggs โ†’ Minnesota Vikings

Wouldn't that be fun?

A reunion.

A contender.

A fan base that already knows exactly what they're getting.

Diggs still has enough left to help a playoff team, and Minnesota makes too much sense not to at least kick the tires.

DeAndre Hopkins โ†’ Detroit Lions

The Lions don't need another superstar.

They need another grown-up.

Hopkins has forgotten more football than most receivers have learned.

Detroit already has explosive playmakers. Adding a savvy veteran for big third downs and red-zone work could quietly become one of the smartest moves of the offseason.

Deebo Samuel โ†’ Denver Broncos

Sean Payton would have a blast drawing plays for Deebo.

Jet sweeps.

Screens.

Backfield carries.

Slants.

Basically every play that makes fantasy football managers scream, "Wait... he's lining up where now?"

Deebo isn't the same player he was three years ago.

He's still the kind of football player defensive coordinators hate preparing for.

And Then...

There are still enough recognizable names floating around free agency that contenders can improve without giving up draft picks. Tyreek Hill, Stefon Diggs, Keenan Allen, DeAndre Hopkins and Deebo Samuel remain among the biggest veteran skill-position players available as training camp approaches.

Which brings me to...

The New York Jets.

Of course.

I somehow drag the Jets into every article, but honestly it's not my fault.

If your team has a hole...

The Jets somehow have two.

Need another receiver?

The Jets could use one.

Need offensive line depth?

The Jets could use that too.

Need a backup quarterback?

Sure.

Need somebody working the concession stand who knows how to keep the nacho cheese warm?

Sign him immediately.

At this point, if Tyreek Hill can catch footballs and refill soda machines, Woody Johnson should already have him on speed dial.

Training camp is almost here.

The Hall of Fame Game is right around the corner.

Fantasy football drafts are filling calendars.

And somewhere...

A future league winner is still sitting on the couch waiting for a phone call.

Sometimes the best offseason move isn't the blockbuster trade.

Sometimes it's signing the veteran everyone else forgot about.
