NFL Training Camp Notebook: Five Teams Already Giving Us Something to Talk About

By Mark Petrozzella · July 22, 2026

Quarterback battles, rookie pressure, fantasy dominoes, and why the first week of camp matters more than you think.

Football is officially back, which means NFL fans have entered my favorite time of the year—the season of unlimited optimism. Every team is undefeated. Every rookie is the next superstar. Every backup quarterback is "making a push," and every coach somehow manages to tell reporters that everyone on the roster is having the best camp of their life.

We've all seen this movie before.

A wide receiver catches three passes in shorts and suddenly he's Jerry Rice. A rookie running back breaks one long run against the third-string defense and fantasy owners are moving him up three rounds. Slow down. Training camp isn't about highlight videos. It's about opportunity, competition, and figuring out which storylines actually matter before your fantasy draft.

Here are five teams whose camps deserve your attention right now.

## Minnesota Vikings: One Quarterback Decision Could Change Everything

No camp battle has bigger fantasy implications than what's happening in Minnesota. The Vikings are evaluating both J.J. McCarthy and veteran Kyler Murray, and whichever quarterback wins the job will immediately change the outlook for one of the league's most talented offenses.

This isn't just about who lines up under center in Week 1. It's about what kind of offense Minnesota wants to become. McCarthy represents the future—a young quarterback with upside, mobility, and a chance to grow into the franchise centerpiece. Murray brings experience, explosiveness, and the ability to turn a broken play into a 40-yard gain.

Fantasy managers should be paying close attention because this decision affects everyone. Justin Jefferson remains one of the best receivers in football regardless of who's throwing him the ball, but Jordan Addison, T.J. Hockenson, and the Vikings' running game could all see their fantasy value shift depending on how this competition unfolds.

Training camp is rarely about one position, but in Minnesota, one quarterback decision has the potential to impact an entire fantasy offense.

## Las Vegas Raiders: The Biggest Story Isn't Even Happening on the Field

The Raiders expected training camp to be about building chemistry with their new franchise quarterback. Instead, they're dealing with contract negotiations involving No. 1 overall pick Fernando Mendoza.

While contract disputes are common this time of year, every missed practice is one less opportunity for a rookie quarterback to build timing with his receivers, learn the offense, and adjust to NFL speed. Quarterbacks need reps more than any other position, and those reps become even more valuable when you're expected to lead a franchise from Day One.

Fantasy players shouldn't panic, but they also shouldn't ignore the situation. The development of the Raiders' passing game depends on how quickly their young quarterback gets on the field and starts working with the offense. Chemistry can't be negotiated. It has to be built.

## Cleveland Browns: Quarterback Drama Has Officially Arrived

No team enters camp with more uncertainty than Cleveland. The battle between Shedeur Sanders and Deshaun Watson has become one of the league's most closely watched quarterback competitions, and every practice is being analyzed for clues about who might eventually win the job.

Quarterback battles create uncertainty, and uncertainty is never comfortable for fantasy managers. Wide receivers, tight ends, and running backs all become harder to evaluate when nobody knows who's taking the first snap in Week 1.

At the same time, these situations often create tremendous value. Every season there are players who slip in fantasy drafts because of quarterback uncertainty, only to become league winners once the situation settles. Cleveland's offense has enough talent that the winner of this competition could elevate several fantasy options almost overnight.

## New York Giants: New Coach, Clean Slate

New coaching staffs have a funny way of changing everything. Players who looked buried on the depth chart suddenly find themselves getting first-team reps, while veterans who once felt secure discover they have to earn their jobs all over again.

That's exactly what's happening with the Giants. Every position feels like an open competition, and training camp has become less about maintaining the roster and more about rebuilding it.

For fantasy players, coaching changes often create hidden opportunities. Every year there's a player who wasn't on anyone's radar in July but becomes a waiver-wire sensation by September because a new coaching staff saw something the previous one didn't.

The Giants may not have the biggest names making headlines, but they have plenty of players fighting for roles that could matter once the regular season begins.

## New York Jets: Enough With the Hype—Show Us Results

Since we're talking football, we have to spend at least a minute discussing the Jets.

Every summer follows the same script. The defense looks fantastic. Someone makes an unbelievable catch in practice. Fans convince themselves this is finally the year, and social media starts planning playoff scenarios before anyone has even tackled another human being.

Here's a crazy idea.

How about we skip the offseason parade this year?

Nobody doubts the Jets have talent. The defense can compete with anyone. The roster has enough pieces to be competitive. The question has never been talent—it has been consistency.
