NFL Headlines

By Lauren Hayes · August 2, 2026

2026 NFL training camp cycle has officially shifted into high gear, delivering a whirlwind of devastating injury updates, blockbuster financial commitments, and a stunning shakeup in the broadcasting world.

As teams wrap up their first full week of summer practice, front offices and coaching staffs are already being forced to pivot ahead of the upcoming season.Injury Bugs Bite Hard in San Francisco and New Orleans

The most crushing blow of the weekend landed in San Francisco. The 49ers officially placed wide receiver Ricky Pearsall on injured reserve, sidelining him for the entire 2026 season. General manager John Lynch confirmed that Pearsall will undergo surgery to repair a recurring posterior cruciate ligament (PCL) injury in his right knee.

The team had hoped rest and rehabilitation would resolve the issue, but persistent swelling forced the decision for surgery, carrying a projected recovery timeline of 6 to 12 months. To fill the sudden void, San Francisco moved quickly to reunite with veteran playmaker Deebo Samuel on a one-year deal.
Meanwhile, the New Orleans Saints suffered an equally brutal defensive setback.

Head coach Kellen Moore confirmed that standout defensive tackle Bryan Bresee will undergo season-ending surgery to repair a torn ACL. The non-contact knee injury occurred during 11-on-11 drills on the first day of training camp. The loss of Bresee, a 2023 first-round draft pick who has amassed 14.5 career sacks, leaves a glaring hole along the interior of the Saints' defensive front.

CBS Sports Temporarily Sidelines Tony Romo
Outside the lines, a major broadcasting shift is coming to Sunday afternoons.

CBS Sports has placed lead color commentator Tony Romo on indefinite leave following an arrest on suspicion of operating a vehicle while intoxicated (OWI) in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. Law enforcement documents revealed an open container of alcohol was also found in his vehicle.

Romo is scheduled for a court hearing on September 21. In his absence, CBS is promoting former Houston Texans legend J.J. Watt to the No. 1 broadcast booth. Watt will partner with veteran play-by-play announcer Jim Nantz and sideline reporter Tracy Wolfson when regular-season broadcasts commence.

Falcons Secure Bergeron with Historic Contract ExtensionIn brighter news, the Atlanta Falcons continue to heavily invest in building a stable foundation for their offense. The team finalized a massive four-year, $96 million contract extension with starting left guard Matthew Bergeron. The blockbuster deal includes $60 million in guaranteed money. It carries an average annual value of $24 million, placing Bergeron among the top-five highest-paid offensive linemen in the NFL. It also sets the record as the richest NFL contract ever signed by a Canadian player.

General manager Ian Cunningham lauded Bergeron as a foundational cornerstone. The extension provides critical long-term stability up front for Atlanta following recent high-profile departures along their offensive line.
